Proposal When the brief was given many ideas sprung into thought when i realised and
took a step back from the building I have been living and working in for the past
three years, upon taking a closer look at the building you realise the way the building
promotes the School for the Arts, and quite frankly the way the building looks will
have a massive effect on the general population who would aspire to work in the Arts
industry.
The signage and the way the college is advertised is rather poor, due to the
design of directions to classes, the signs that explain which building is, the sign for
the art school is but five meters away from parsons walk which we are hardly associated
with which leads to a lot of confusion when visitors come to the college, Even
down to the way each floor in the college is displayed, small grey plaques just don’t
cut it and not even mentioning the prospectus and brochure that are completely
miss-matched, we’re an art college and everyone seems to have this preconceived
view of a bohemian lifestyle which we may look like in person but the building does
not reflect the attitude and personality that each student has, the college should look
individual, unique and should stand out from the rest so that we actually look like an
art college rather than a soulless block of flats.
The School for the Arts needs a radical change, I propose to change not just the
Brochure and the signage of the college, but the building itself, the building needs
some sort of ‘flare’ something that defines us as a place where the creativity of minds
is housed, white-wash the entire college begin a gigantic mural, up-light the building
at night, change everything and really re-brand. The simple yet effective professional
design of the prospectus is the way to go, the main thing that really needs to change
is the design of the building and the way we are advertised, we really need to get out
there advertise on billboards, bus stops, vehicle sides the sky is the limit. Lets move
out of the past and propel ourselves into the future beginning with the overhaul of the
way were perceived from the outside, remove these small, neat, tidy, friendly signs
and replace them with massive signs dragging people into our building, something
professional yet enjoyable.
We must move away from being this bland, lifeless place where the strange
‘arty farty’ people frequent, and blow every ones mind and fit the college to the
students, we wont conform to the norm.
